Canadian Pricing compared with US Prices
 12/4/2010  by
We try to price our products as reasonably and fairly as possible. Typically, you will see our list prices set about 40% above the US retail price. Those list prices are not updated more than twice per year. Our retail prices and sale prices are based on our cost to purchase the products and the market demand for those products. Exchange rate is only one factor, as mentioned below. During periods when we or our suppliers are able to import with an attractive exchange rate, our prices will generally be between 10% to 20% above the US price, but where the exchange rates are not attractive (such as when the C$ is worth less than US$0.90, the prices can be between 25% to 50% higher than the US price. Most of our products come from Canadian suppliers (distributors). These suppliers set the Canadian suggested price and may also set a minimum Canadian advertised price (MAP). Most of these suppliers have special agreements in place that require all Canadian retailers to source those products only from them. That prevents us from purchasing the products from the US game publisher or US distributors. Typically, wholesale costs from Canadian suppliers are between 15% to 40% above US wholesale costs. Those costs are reflected in retail prices. Where there is not a Canadian supplier, we may be able to purchase the products from US suppliers, but the size of the shipment will generally be smaller with impacts of import shipping, brokerage, and customs charges. Those costs are typically 15% to 20% above US wholesale costs without cosideration for exchange rates which will also increase the costs for those products proportionally. As import costs are quite significant, shipments of US imports are not frequent and may not be when the exchange rate is most attractive. Retail pricing is determined based on exchange rates when the products are imported, not when the product is purchased by customers. Canadian prices are affected by several factors: 1) Shipping costs from the US to a Canadian port of entry and the cost to ship the products again to the Canadian warehouse 2) Import duties, Customs brokerage fees and taxes 3) Minimum advertised prices (MAP) set by the US or Canadian supplier 4) Competitive marketplace (Supply and Demand) 5) Exchange rate when the products are imported (not when sold) We hope that this helps you to understand how our prices are set and hope that this helps you to make sense of differences in pricing when exchange rates are closer to par.
